What these numbers are not

There is no official public dashboard of “total active H-1Bs right now.” DHS yearbook estimates of the H-1B population are delayed, not company-level, and not updated like a debt clock. DOL LCA data counts certified applications and requested/certified positions. USCIS then decides petitions. Most approvals in any year are extensions and transfers. Cap-exempt employers (universities, nonprofits, some research orgs) sit outside the 85,000 cap. Multiple legal entities of the same brand file separately unless you combine them.
